Most air conditioners are controlled from a remote control, which can be of two types: wireless remote and wired wall. The first type is a separate device with infrared emitters on the sides, which give a signal to the photodetector of an air conditioner or indoor unit, if it is a split system.
It is very convenient to control the climate of the air conditioner from the remote control (RC) - information about the current operating parameters is displayed on the panel of the indoor unit and on the display of the remote control in the form of icons and digital symbols.
For semi-industrial and industrial systems, there are wall-mounted wired consoles, which often come as an option to the climatic kit. They are connected to the indoor unit of the split system using a cable and have a stationary type of placement, that is, they are tied to one place. In public organizations, it is much easier to control the climate of air conditioners from a stationary remote control, since in this case its loss is excluded.
Main functions and their designations
What functions is the split-system control panel responsible for? It:
- installation of the main operating modes: cooling, heating, ventilation, dehumidification, auto mode;
- installation of additional modes such as TURBO, air ionization, defrosting, timer;
- setting the desired temperature;
- fan speed adjustment;
- adjustment of the blinds movement (for some models of split systems, both horizontal and vertical slats are controlled by the remote control).
Any remote control from the air conditioner has standard designations for all modes and functions, which are applied to the buttons in the form of so-called icons (icons) or inscriptions and are displayed on the display panel.
For different manufacturers, the set of key symbols can vary greatly and even hide under the pull-out panel of the remote control.
What are the button designations on the split system air conditioner panel?
- On/Off or Power - starting and shutting down the device;
- Mode - setting the main modes (with the next press, the next mode is selected);
- Swing and Air Direction - swinging the curtains and choosing the direction;
- Fan - fan speed mode (pressing this icon on the air conditioner remote control again leads to a transition to a different rotation speed);
- Timer - start and shutdown mode according to the set time
- Sleep - sleep function, which is active only when heating or cooling;
- Clean air - air ionization;
- Turbo or Full Power - starting at maximum power;
- Display – viewing the current parameters on the display or turning it off completely;
- Set or Ok - confirmation of the choice of parameters;
- Reset - reset all current settings;
- Lock - button lock.
An icon in the air conditioner remote control such as Clean usually denotes a key responsible for additional cleaning (dehumidification) of the indoor unit after operation. It helps to avoid bacterial growth in a humid environment and therefore odor. Keys Led or Lighting are also not found in all split systems. They are responsible for backlighting the display.
Additional designations
In addition to the listed buttons, there are also such icons in the air conditioner remotes as:
- «+"And"—»- are responsible for setting the temperature or timer;
- triangles up and down - is more often responsible for temperature parameters.
Some buttons are replaced by icons in the air conditioner remotes initially. For example, Timer indicated by a button with an image watch dial, but Display may mean “house with a thermometer". As a rule, an instruction is attached to this device, describing in detail how to reconfigure the remote control for a specific air conditioner model. This can be done in two ways.
- Manual setting. Button Select start flipping of code ciphers on the display, each of which corresponds to a certain brand of split systems. Turning on the device indicates the selection of the appropriate code. Then confirm the selection with the button Ok and check the functionality of the remote control;
- Automatic configuration is used if the list does not contain a cipher for the existing equipment. Click Select and hold for a few seconds until the remote control starts sending signals to the indoor unit and automatic code setting starts.
All universal air conditioner remotes support the same functions and modes as the original ones. They carry out full climate control of split systems.

Many are accustomed to the fact that remote control devices are stored wherever convenient. It is because of this that they are lost or fail. It is much more convenient to use the mount for the remote control from the air conditioner, which is included in the kit. It is made in the form of a plastic cover that is attached to the wall using small screws or nuts.
One of the options for attaching the air conditioner remote control can be the purchase of plastic sticky hook-holders. These devices are universal and fit not only for remote control devices from climate technology.
If the kit does not include a mount for the air conditioner remote control, you can make it yourself by fixing a suitable size dowel-nail on the wall and hanging the device on it.
Possible malfunctions
What problems can users experience with the remote control? More often, buyers complain that the air conditioner does not respond to the remote control or that the operation is only partially present. What are the causes of this problem?
First of all, they determine where the catch lies: in the control device itself or in a split system. If the remote control is working properly, then when any button is pressed, a flash of the LED will be visible. Then they look for problems in the work of the blocks. The serviceability of the indoor module is checked by starting without a remote control.
- You can try to replace the batteries with new ones, while strictly observing the polarity;
- Sometimes the reason that the air conditioner does not want to respond to the remote control is the presence of voltage problems in the network. It may not correspond to the required parameters or have too frequent fluctuations. Switch off the device completely and restart after 10 minutes. If this does not help, check the rated voltage. Sometimes the ingress of small insects leads to the closure of the chain;
- Perhaps the problem is a broken diode behind the transformer. It is advisable to replace it with a rapidly recovering one;
- The thermistor on the evaporator could be damaged. It is replaced with a new one;
- Often the fuse on the control board blows, or worse, the board itself. This is eliminated by replacing it;
- The infrared photodetector located on the indoor unit may be defective. When changing, be sure to take into account the desired frequency;
- The room air temperature sensor or the sensor on the heat exchanger of the indoor module could become unusable;
- Sometimes the air conditioner does not respond to panel commands due to a banal failure in the settings after power surges. They reset the parameters and install everything again until the system is re-encoded.
If none of these options is suitable in a particular case, then they contact the service department to make a "diagnosis" and carry out repair and restoration work.
